Turves Green Primary School, Birmingham

Year 2

Welcome to the Year 2 page. The staff in Year 2 are Mrs Jones and Mrs Fellows-Campbell (2J) and Mrs Spruce and Mrs Cordiner (2S).

In Maths we are encouraging the children to become confident and fluent with their number bonds within 100. We are looking at tens and ones and thinking about how numbers can be partitioned in different ways. We have been using our part, part whole models to explore these facts and to record them in different ways including as a number equation and a bar model. We are beginning to use this knowledge to find the missing number in an equation and to help us to recall number facts more fluently.

Below are some useful websites you can access at home to support your child with their Maths learning.

In English we will use Talk for Writing to develop the children's language and understanding of different text types. This term we will be exploring narratives, fact files and poetry linked to our topic on The Great Fire of London.

Please practise spellings daily as children need to spelling them correctly within all their written work, not just in their spelling test, which will be held on a Monday each week. Spelling books will be sent home on a Tuesday for you to discuss with your child. Please return these by Thursday ready for the following weeks spelling test.

It is a school expectation that your child reads for 5-10 minutes each night. Please continue to support your child with this aspect of their learning. Reading books will be changed 3 times a week at school, giving your child the opportunity to re-read their books to develop fluency and their understanding of the text.

This term our topic is 'The Great Fire of London'. The children will find out all about how the fire started, how it spread and how it was eventually put out. The topic will be cross curricular. We will be producing silhouette pictures in Computing, sketching Tudor houses in Art, exploring different materials in Science and how this had an impact on the events during the Great Fire of London.

We will also be designing and building our own Tudor houses in D.T. using different materials. We will be holding an exhibition at the end of our topic to display all of our fantastic learning. Look out for more information soon!
