Fish and chips anyone?

11th Jul 2019

Yesterday, Year 4 started their 'Materials' science unit with a question...

Exactly what makes good paper for fish and chips?

We explored paper's qualities and found that it could be strong but fragile; waterproof but absorbent and thin but thick, depending on the type of paper you investigated. We looked at grease-proof paper, acetate, 3 sorts of wrapping paper, white packaging (chip shop) paper and crepe paper.

Each group tested the sheets and decided upon their winner. Surprisingly the combination of grease-proof paper and packaging paper didn't win. It was only when we looked a the cost of each type of paper that we realised why it is so widely used.
