Maths

At Turves Green Primary we aim to prepare children for the next stage of their education and lay the foundations for successful lives after school.  We recognise the importance of preparing children for the jobs of tomorrow, which will require greater mathematical skills than in the past, including thinking mathematically in order to use technology that as yet doesn’t even exist.

Concrete Pictorial and Abstract (CPA) approach.

Children use a concrete (things they can touch), pictorial (drawing and representation) and abstract (the numbers) in most lessons, to ensure they really understand the maths.

Maths Fluency

It is vital that children are fluent in aspect of maths to support their learning in school. This differs from year to year. By the end of each year the expectations are that children know quickly:

Year 1

To count 2, 5, 10

Number bonds within 10.

Year 2

2, 5, 10 Multiplications (including division of)

Number bonds to 100

Year 3

3, 4, 8 Multiplications (including division of)

Year 4

All multiplications up to 12 (including division of).

Year 5

Reinforcing all multiplications up to 12 (including divisions of)

Year 6

Reinforcing all multiplications up to 12 (including divisions of).
