Teaching children to look after themselves

We all believe that it is very important for children to feel safe and be protected, so we are keen to work together to make sure this happens.

We teach children how they can take steps to protect themselves. We teach them basic safety rules for example not to play with matches, how to cross the road and be safe, to say ‘no’ to strangers and how to deal with being bullied. We have very good relationships with the community police officers who regularly visit school. We also have regular visits from the fire fighters and the railway police to make sure that children play safely.

We encourage children to tell an adult if they are feeling unhappy about anything or if they think they or anyone else is being bullied. We always take what the children say seriously and thoroughly investigate what has happened, taking any action that may be then needed. We will always keep you informed of any behaviour difficulties or incidents that happen in school so we can work together to make sure they do not happen again.

We have a School Council made up of children from the Key Stage Two classes. They meet regularly to discuss their class’s ideas about school and how they can improve things at school for example they suggested a friendship stop and more litter bins in the playgrounds. These things are now in place.
